The Closure ABCs – Part 1
the-closure-abcs-part-1
Containers are like headliners. They are built in a variety of different styles and can even appear in various colors. Closures are assumed as being less interesting and don't garner as much attention, often making them the afterthought of packaging.

It's like containers are as sought after as Justin Bieber concert tickets and closures are represented by your pre-teen daughter's choice of I'm a Beliber nail color. Like I said, an afterthought, a disheartening, tormented one at that. With that said quit drinking the kool-aid for a hot second and take a quick trip through the boss world of closures.

1. Disc Top Cap
You know that handy, easy to use cap that's on your shampoo bottle? Yeah, the one shaped like a disc that has the indention made just for your thumb. Push down and voila, the opposite side of the disc pops, revealing a sliver opening, making access to container contents available. That's a disc top cap. This type of closure is easy to maneuver and even provides an airtight seal to protect contained products. This cap paired with a squeezable LDPE bottle is a match made in heaven, a combination many shampoo and lotion companies have capitalized on. Our disc top cap inventory includes both smooth and ribbed styles in white, black, natural and copper.

2. Flip Top Cap
You can refer to this closure as the summer time lid. Not because it's commonly found on sunscreen containers but because it rhymes with everyone's favorite seasonal shoe, the flip flop. The flip top cap could be chosen out of a line up by its protruding lip, located just opposite of the sometimes visible hinge, that enables the cap to be flipped up and opened or pushed down and closed. Flip top caps work well for hair and lotion products. We carry ribbed and smooth flip top caps in black and white.

3. Spouted Cap
The spouted cap is a very unique dispensing cap. It is set apart from all other standard closures by the addition of a levered spout. When the spout is raised to its extended position, product can be discharged, when depressed it provides an air tight seal. We carry both ribbed and smooth styles of this closure in white and black. Spouted caps can be useful for products that need to be dispensed in a given direction, making it convenient for lotions and hair products.

4. Push/Pull Lid
The push/pull lid could be otherwise referred to as the kid friendly closure. The movable lid allows the contents to be sealed and contained with a swift push or unsealed and available for use with a strong pull. Some of our push/pull lids include a clear protective cap, meant for keeping the nozzle clean and sanitary in the case of water bottle use. Not only used with water and beverage products, you can also recognize push/pull lids on dish washing liquid containers.

We've only just begun our journey into the science of closureology. Yet, I hope you've recognized that the reality of lids and caps is much more vibrant and diverse than you may have thought. Study up on your options, by browsing and sampling our disc top, flip top, spouted and push pull lids to see which closure will work best for your product.

If you're just starving for more packaging insights visit our closure section of Container and Packaging Supply University (CPSU) to tide you over until the next blog post, detailing the second portion of this closure exploration.
