Sifter Product Testing Part 2

sifter-product-testing-part-2
As promised, I've returned to dissect the sifters of Container & Packaging Supply. This edition of testing is going to be devoted to a couple of lids with slight personality confusion. Check them out: the L620BK and the L630Y. Wait, you must be thinking, what are those funny letters in the item number? BK? Y? Even L? Well, the L stands for lid. The BK and Y actually refer to the color of the lid (BK for black and Y for yellow). These lids come in different colors, which allow you to color-code your spice cabinet. Yellow would be great for dried mustard or curry powder, black would be perfect for pepper. You might want green for basil and parsley, red for cinnamon and chili powder, and white for baking soda. Just think of the possibilities!

Back to the testing. I mentioned that these two lids are coping with personality confusion. You would be, too. They can be lids, closing bottles and keeping products safely inside. Or they can be sifters, joyfully shaking shakable stuff out. Or they can activate their secret super power: the pour/spoon opening. This hinged opening on the lid is big enough for a measuring spoon. Is your mind blown yet? No wonder these lids are confused!

L620BK Sifter

I started with the smaller of the two lids, which is the L620BK. This sifter has three relatively small holes, each at 0.23 in diameter. If you remember back to Part 1, that means that these holes are slightly smaller than the holes of the 5-hole spice sifter. This sifter works great for spices as big as peppercorns and red chili flakes. I also measured the size of the spoon opening. I used three different sets of measuring spoons, and all three shapes (round, oval, squarish) of the ½ teaspoons fit perfectly.

L630Y Sifter

Next, I moved on to the L630Y. This sifter has very generous openings, at 0.3 in diameter. I started pulling out the big testing products: chocolate chips, cloves, dried beans, and more. The chocolate chips were a no-go. So I just ate them. The cloves, however, shook nicely through this sifter. Split peas also worked great with this lid, and dried black beans are about as big as this sifter could handle. The spoon opening was large enough for a ½ tablespoon. This sifter has very generous openings, so it is perfect for larger products. You probably want to get a sifter with smaller holes for strong ingredients, such as salt or garlic, so that they don't pour too quickly.

Now, on to the last two sifters!
