Sifter Product Testing Part 1
sifter-product-testing-part-1
The first two sifters that I tested are the 5-hole spice sifter and the 11-hole spice sifter. These are both natural-colored sifters. They snap onto bottles like this one with 43 mm openings. The names imply that they are 43 mm in diameter, but in reality, they are smaller than that. This is so that a 43 mm cap will fit over the sifter, and the sifter won't get stuck inside. You probably want to get a matching lid to cover the sifter so that you don't inadvertently spill your sift-able products all over the place.

11-Hole Spice Sifter

The 11-hole spice sifter has, you guessed it, 11 holes. These are pretty tiny holes at 0.135 in diameter. You might be thinking to yourself, that's a fine number, but how big is it REALLY? That is where my testing comes in. I am going to de-technical-ize these products so that you don't have to (and yes, I just made that word up). I wanted to discover what you could shake through this closure easily. I raided my spice cabinet and started testing to see what spices could actually fit through those tiny holes. I started with peppercorns, but they were too big. Next, I moved down to whole coriander seeds, which, though smaller, were still too large for this sifter. I wanted to find something larger than a ground powder that would work with this sifter, so I dug farther into my spices. I found cumin seeds and sesame seeds. To my relief, both of these spices shook easily through this sifter. So, as a conclusion, the 11-hole spice sifter works well for products the size of a sesame seed or smaller. It is perfect for sugar, salt, glitter, or seed beads.

5-Hole Spice Sifter

The 5-hole spice sifter is very similar to the 11-hole in size and color, but it only has five holes. Each of these openings is significantly larger than those of the 11-hole closure. They are 0.25 in diameter. I used the same method of testing as previously described. I found that it works great for sunflower seeds, dried rosemary leaves, and chocolate sprinkles, as well as anything smaller. So snap this sifter on and start shaking those sprinkles!

Now that I've thoroughly measured the spice sifters, I'm moving on. Check back later for the next round of sifter testing!
