Amber Boston: Bendgate Part 2
amber-boston-bendgate-part-2
This is the rest of the Bendgate story. After I got changed into my ultra-comfy yoga pants, I reexamined the lids. I had both plastic and metal lids, and none of them were bent at all! So much for this conspiracy. I was about to write up my report telling my superiors that they were mistaken about Bendgate originating at Container & Packaging Supply when I decided I'd better try a few more tests.

First, I separated the lids by material: plastic vs. metal. Then I started bending the lids with my bare hands. You read that right: with my BARE. HANDS. Amazingly, some of them bent! The metal lids took a lot of pressure, but I was able to bend them completely out of shape. When I released them, they did not bounce back to their original shape, but retained their bent form. I attempted to bend the lids back, but they had dents and creases. These lids would be fairly useless if they experienced Bendgate.

Next, I targeted the plastic lids. I had a few polypropylene (PP) lids and a few polystyrene (PS) lids. The PP lids bent a little bit as a used my brute strength to test them. When I released these lids from my amazing grip, they bounced right back to their original shape. Then I donned the safety glasses and bent them with a pair of pliers. They kept bending. And bending. And then they kept their shape when I let go of the pliers. I'm sure they would break with the right amount of pressure, but they were surprisingly resilient. Maybe Bendgate refers to the fact that if you try to bend these lids, they'll just keep bending.

The PS lids were last. They were clear and nice to look at, and I remembered how terribly uncomfortable they were when I had them in my skinny jeans pockets. Try as I might, I couldn't bend these with my own strength. But when I took the pliers to them, they shattered. They are lovely lids, but they make quite a mess when attacked with pliers. Could Bendgate be caused by these shattering lids?

After playing with the lids, I decided a few things. First, don't put lids in your pockets if you're wearing skinny jeans. It isn't comfortable (and the same can probably be said for your phablet). Second, metal lids bend easier than plastic lids, and they don't keep their shape when bent back. Third, remember your safety glasses when you start really trying to bend those PS lids.

In conclusion, I think that my superiors are completely bonkers. This whole Bendgate has nothing to do with Container & Packaging Supply lids. I'll drop my report off in the usual dead drop, but I might be a bit more discriminating when it comes to further investigations.

Signing off until next time, this is Amber Boston.
